What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), a physician and surgeon who treats the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. Unlike most other types of physicians, a Podiatrist begins their specific area of study on day one of medical school, which makes them different than “MD’s” or “DO’s”.

A DPM completes years of rigorous foot and ankle training including four years in a podiatric medical school (there are only nine in the US) and three years of hospital-based residency training, similar to that of other types of physicians. While many people think Podiatrists only ‘cut toenails on seniors’, they do much, much more including treat fractures, sprains and perform surgery! Take a look at the ‘Treatment’ tab for a more comprehensive list.
